CIMA Artists and Companies Appreciated at 2016 JUNOS!
Amid another great celebration of Canadian music in Calgary this year, over a dozen CIMA-affiliated artists walked away with JUNO Award wins!
The festivities capped off with an exciting live broadcast from Calgary's downtown Saddledome on Sunday night, April 3.
Among the musicians recognized by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences this year were:
- Vocal Jazz Album of the Year: Emilie-Claire Barlow, Clear Day (eOne)
- Country Album of the Year: Gypsy Road, Dean Brody (Open Road Recordings)
- Rock Album of the Year: Death From Above 1979, The Physical World (Last Gang Entertainment)
- Breakthrough Group of the Year: Dear Rouge (Pandyamonium Management)
- Recording Engineer of the Year: Shawn Everett for “Don’t Wanna Fight” and “Gimme All Your Love” from Alabama Shakes, Sound & Colour (Maple Music/ATO) (Fontana North)
- Blues Album of the Year: Harrison Kennedy, This Is From Here (Outside Music)
- Recording Package of the Year: Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski of Clyde Henry Productions and Ian Ilavsky of Constellation for Lost Voices, Esmerine (Outside Music)
- Traditional Roots Album of the Year: Pharis and Jason Romero, A Wanderer I’ll Stay (Borealis)(eOne)
- Producer of the Year: Bob Ezrin for “Honey Honey” and “What Love Is All About” from Adult Contemporary Album of the Year: Johnny Reid, What Love Is All About (The Feldman Agency)
- Contemporary Roots Album of the Year: Buffy Sainte-Marie, Power in the Blood (True North Records) (eOne)
- Instrumental Album of the Year: Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld, Never Were the Way She Was (Outside Music)
- Adult Alternative Album of the Year: Whitehorse, Leave No Bridge Unburned (Six Shooter Records)
- Classical Composition of the Year: Dinuk Wijeratne, Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems (Centrediscs)
In all, 34 CIMA member companies were represented with JUNO Award nominations in 2016.
The diverse categories that independent artists excelled in – from Jazz, to Country, to Instrumental, to Rock – shows the wide range of talent and musical expression that a healthy indie scene is capable of fostering.
CIMA congratulates all the winners and nominees from across Canada’s unrivalled music industry who took part in the JUNO festivities in Calgary.
We’re especially proud of independent artist who overcame adversity and unlikely odds to make their voices heard, and be recognized for their individual talents.
