[TORONTO, ON – November 30, 2023] – Earlier today, CIMA President Andrew Cash participated in the Consultation on Copyright in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) roundtable, hosted by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and The Department of Canadian Heritage. The Government is seeking input from Canadians and stakeholders regarding copyright policy questions related to AI.

The topics of discussion in this roundtable session primarily focused on the utilization of copyright-protected works in training AI systems for text and data mining (TDM) activities, as well as authorship and ownership rights related to AI-generated content. Additionally, the conversation addressed concerns about infringement and liability on copyright-protected works associated with AI-generated content.

“It's important that the music sector remains a strong voice in helping to shape the trajectory of AI development,” says Cash. “By actively participating and advocating for responsible practices, we can work to influence the future of our industry.”

Canadian individuals and organizations are encouraged to submit their written feedback through the online form here before the January 15, 2024 deadline.
