CIMA & January Music Meeting Present Navigating U.S. Visa Applications + Border Laws
The U.S. music market is one of the world’s biggest influencers so it’s no surprise that Canadian artists are eager to travel south of the 49th parallel. One of the greatest barriers for breaking into the U.S. market is the permit necessary for artists to cross the border. The application process can be expensive, daunting, and there are many common misconceptions for artists obtaining a U.S. visa. This session is targeted towards export-ready artists or professionals poised to break into the U.S. touring market in 2020 and will explore the various options for work permits and the laws behind the process.

David Amar focuses his practice at CoveyLaw on preparing O and P visa petitions within the firm’s performing arts division. As a Canadian citizen, he has first-hand experience negotiating the U.S. immigration process. David has worked in various facets of entertainment, IP and employment law, where he has advised entities ranging from independent musicians, to a major publishing corporation, to an early-stage tech startup. He has provided pro bono services to his local food cooperative, and with Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. David is also a multi-instrumentalist who has performed in various ensembles in Vancouver, Toronto, and New York, and was a professional chef before moving to Brooklyn.
